The internet has been erupting with news that both Samsung and LG are being urged to drop the Android operating system. The story originated out of The Motley Fool with Digitimes adding fuel to the fire when it reported that Samsung was looking to purchase WebOS from Palm HP.
The South Korean government is urging both Samsung and LG to join a coalition, made up of other Korean companies, to develop their own mobile operating system. The South Korean deputy commerce minister stated that the companies cannot go on relying solely on Google. Rumors are now pointing to Samsung’s interest in HP’s WebOS, which are stating that the tech giant is looking to purchase the mobile operating system rather than licensing it.
As with any rumor, this should all be taken with a grain of salt. Why would Samsung be looking to leave Android following all the success they have found, recently becoming the worlds number two smartphone vendor. I should also point out that both Samsung and LG were among Google’s many partners whopraised their acquisition of Motorola.
With the merger, Google’s partners will now be protected from the recent surge in patent lawsuits, that is unless they attempt to copy the competition’s design.
What do you think? Could Samsung pump life into WebOS, or is it safe to assume they will be with Android till the end?
